In brief

China's 2026 nationwide public holiday schedule is set in State Council General Office notice 国办发明电〔2025〕7号, issued 4 November 2025. New Year runs 1-3 January; Spring Festival 15-23 February (9 days); Qingming 4-6 April; Labor Day 1-5 May; Dragon Boat 19-21 June; Mid-Autumn 25-27 September; National Day 1-7 October. Several weekends are swapped as make-up workdays so those blocks line up.

Who started it

Modern PRC public holiday arrangements are announced by the General Office of the State Council, combining fixed solar dates (New Year's Day, Labor Day, National Day) with lunisolar festivals (Spring Festival, Qingming, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn).

Spring Festival is the longest break at nine days. National Day is seven. The notice encourages combining paid annual leave to form longer trips and asks local governments to keep safety staffing during the peaks.

How to read make-up workdays

Chinese public holiday notices often move a weekend day onto a Friday or Monday block, then designate a nearby Saturday or Sunday as a normal workday. In 2026 that happens around New Year, Spring Festival, Labor Day, and National Day.

Factories, schools, and offices follow the notice unless a locality publishes a narrower rule. Stock-market and bank schedules in mainland China generally track these blocks, but specific exchange circulars still matter for trading hours.

Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR publish their own statutory holiday lists. Do not assume the mainland Spring Festival nine-day pattern applies there unchanged.
