The Earth Dragon year starts February 17, not January 1
A birth year alone doesn't fix a Chinese zodiac sign, because the zodiac calendar is lunar and a Gregorian year like 1988 spans parts of two different lunar years. The Hong Kong Observatory's Gregorian-Lunar Calendar Conversion Table for 1988, the government's reference for converting between the two calendars, labels the relevant lunar year Wu-chen (戊辰) and marks February 17, 1988 as the first day of its first lunar month, the actual start of the new year. Everyone born January 1 through February 16, 1988, the 47 days before that boundary, was born under the outgoing year instead, Ding-mao (丁卯), Fire Rabbit, the same Fire Rabbit year described in the 1987 guide.
The year doesn't end on December 31 either. The Observatory's table for 1989 shows the twelfth and final lunar month of Wu-chen running through February 5, 1989; the next day, February 6, opens the following lunar year, Ji-si (己巳), Earth Snake. That puts the full Earth Dragon window at February 17, 1988 through February 5, 1989, a span of 355 days close to an ordinary lunar year's length. Unlike the Rabbit year immediately before it, which the Observatory's tables show inserting a leap sixth lunar month to keep the calendar aligned with the seasons . The Observatory's 1987 table records a leap sixth lunar month for Fire Rabbit; the 1987 Fire Rabbit guide documents that extended year, while its 1988 table lists twelve ordinary months for Wu-chen, with no repeated month.
Two musicians born two days apart in January 1988 are Rabbits, not Dragons
A year-only lookup would label every 1988 birthday Dragon, but the Hong Kong Observatory's lunar boundary falls on February 17. That leaves the year's first 47 calendar days in the prior zodiac year; two musicians born two days apart fall inside that interval.
Skrillex, the Grammy-winning DJ and producer born Sonny John Moore, was born January 15, 1988, per Wikipedia (checked 12 October 2026), more than a month before that year's lunar new year on February 17. By the Hong Kong Observatory's boundary, his birth falls in the preceding zodiac year, Ding-mao, Fire Rabbit, not the Earth Dragon his birth year alone would suggest. FKA Twigs, the singer and producer born Tahliah Debrett Barnett, was born January 17, 1988, also per Wikipedia (checked 12 October 2026), thirty-one days short of the same cutoff, which places her in the identical position: Fire Rabbit, not Dragon. Both were born inside the same 47-day window discussed above, the stretch of calendar-year 1988 that belongs to the year before.
Not every early-1988 birthday raises the question. Rihanna, born February 20, 1988, arrived three days after the cutoff, which makes her a straightforward Earth Dragon by the same Observatory table, no boundary to check. The boundary affects the first 47 days of calendar-year 1988; birthdays from February 17 onward fall within its Earth Dragon year. The January birthstone guide uses the Gregorian month and assigns garnet throughout January. That monthly convention does not replace the lunar date check required for a zodiac animal.
Why Dragon years are always Yang, never Yin
"Earth Dragon" stacks two separate labels, and the traditional calendar tracks each on its own clock. The animal comes from a twelve-position cycle of Earthly Branches; the element comes from a ten-position cycle of Heavenly Stems, where each of the five elements appears twice, once Yang and once Yin. The two clocks only realign every 60 years, the sexagenary cycle, and because ten and twelve share a greatest common factor of two, with Zi counted as position 1, odd-numbered branches pair with Yang stems and even-numbered branches pair with Yin stems. The Dragon's branch, Chen, sits at the fifth (odd-numbered) position, so a Dragon year is always Yang. Its year names cycle through only five stems, Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren, the Yang form of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water respectively, never once through a Yin stem.
Xu is the Dog branch at slot 11, so it pairs with Yang in the 1994 zodiac year. Mao (Rabbit) sits at slot 4, an even position associated with Yin; the 1987 Fire Rabbit page shows that pairing in the preceding year. Wikipedia's articles on the Earthly Branches and the sexagenary cycle document the same odd-Yang, even-Yin pairing when branches are numbered from Zi as 1 (checked 13 October 2026): Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog are permanently Yang animals; Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, and Pig are permanently Yin. 1988's stem is Wu, Yang earth, so 1988 is specifically the Yang Earth Dragon, though almanacs typically drop the "Yang" label since it never varies for this animal and would be redundant on every Dragon-year page.
The other Earth Dragon year most people alive have never seen
Because a specific stem-branch pairing like Wu-chen only recurs once every 60 years, the previous Earth Dragon year was 1928, six decades before 1988, and the next one is 2048, six decades after. Every other Dragon year in between carries a different element, cycling through the five Yang stems in order: 1976 was Bing-chen, Fire Dragon; 2000 was Geng-chen, Metal Dragon; 2012 was Ren-chen, Water Dragon; 2024, the most recent one, was Jia-chen, Wood Dragon, widely covered in the press at the time as an auspicious Lunar New Year; the next one, 2036, returns to Bing-chen, Fire Dragon, before the cycle reaches Wu-chen again in 2048.
The lunar new year date changes from year to year. Hong Kong Observatory tables place it on February 17 in 1988, January 29 in 1987, and February 6 in 1989; across the calendar, the date falls between January 21 and February 20. Each year's boundary therefore needs to be checked against its own conversion table.
